Our Melan-Ade: A Post-Workout Ritual for Skin
We originally created this recipe to celebrate Pholk's Summer GlowUp at the LA premier party for ESPN's "Life in the W" Docu-series. But folks loved it so much that we're dropping it here as well. You know that feeling right after a workout — heart still pounding, skin flushed, body just... open? That's exactly when the Melan-Ade comes in. It's our post-workout tonic, built around the same ingredient doing all the work in our GoldenBod Balm: Chaga Melanin.
Why Chaga, Why Now
Chaga's been a folk medicine staple forever — people have trusted this mushroom to help the body bounce back for centuries. What makes it a Pholk favorite is the melanin in it, which is basically a mirror of the melanin already in our skin. In GoldenBod Balm, that melanin goes to work rebuilding your skin barrier from the outside. The Melan-Ade just sends it inward instead — right when your body's most ready to soak it up. Drink your melanin, then let it work on your skin too.
The Melan-Ade Recipe
Serves 1 | Best sipped within 20 minutes post-workout
Ingredients
-
1 cup brewed Chaga tea, cooled to room temperature
-
1 tablespoon raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar (look for one with "the mother")
-
1 tablespoon raw honey or maple syrup
-
1/2 lemon, juiced
-
A pinch of sea salt (for electrolyte replenishment)
-
Ice, to serve
-
Optional: a few fresh mint leaves or a dash of cinnamon for warmth
Directions
-
Brew your Chaga base. Simmer 1–2 tablespoons of dried Chaga chunks in 2 cups of water for 15–20 minutes, or steep a Chaga tea bag for 10 minutes in just-boiled water. Let it cool — you want it earthy, not scalding, when it hits the ACV.
-
Build the tonic. In a mason jar or shaker, combine 1 cup of the cooled Chaga tea with the apple cider vinegar, honey, lemon juice, and sea salt.
-
Shake it down. Seal and shake vigorously for 15–20 seconds until the honey dissolves and everything's fully combined.
-
Pour over ice. Add your mint or cinnamon if you're using it.
-
Sip slow. This is a ritual, not a chug — give your body time to take it in while your muscles are still warm and receptive.
More Than a Recipe
While you're restoring your body, take a few minutes to restore your skin as well. After showering, massage some GoldenBod Balm on any dry spots or use as a massage butter to let Chaga work its melanin magic from the inside and out. OH! And if you missed our Glow Bar at the Life in the W event, you can catch the RECAP here on Instagram.
